A Call to Action
for Safer Homes
Who Was Awaab Ishak?
Awaab Ishak was a two-year-old boy living in social housing in Rochdale, UK. In 2020, he tragically died as a direct result of prolonged exposure to damp and mould in his home — exposure that had been repeatedly reported but not addressed. His death shocked the nation and sparked a wave of public demand for accountability and change in the housing sector.
What Is Awaab’s Law?
Awaab’s Law, passed in 2023, sets out a clear and urgent legal requirement for landlords to act swiftly when damp and mould are reported. It places new responsibilities on social landlords to:
- Investigate complaints of damp and mould within a specified timeframe
- Act promptly to remedy the issue
- Communicate clearly and consistently with tenants about the status of repairs
- Failure to do so is now considered a breach of legal housing standards, with potential consequences.
Why It Matters
Awaab’s Law isn’t just about policy — it’s about people. It’s about ensuring that no child, no family, and no tenant has to live in unsafe, unhealthy conditions because of inaction or neglect. It gives tenants a voice and enforces accountability across the housing sector.
“Whether you’re a landlord, housing officer, or tenant — we all have a role to play in preventing another tragedy like Awaab’s.”
